Announcing “Dalmatia Express,” a 850-kilometer Cycling Tour
From Italy to Croatia
Pilot Cycling Tour Will Lead Riders on 5-Day Journey, Beginning 15 March
This March, Cycle Trentino partners with our friends at Hvar Life to guide a five-day, self-supported cycle adventure from Treviso, Italy to Hvar, Croatia. The pilot tour, capped at a dozen participants for the inaugural year, will begin in Italy’s Veneto region in Treviso, a city renowned for rich cycling history and home to legendary Pinarello bike company, an event sponsor.
So, how did this come about? I swear, it’s the power of dreaming. One night, over dinner and many, many bottles of wine, Matt of Cycle Trentino and Massimo of Hvar Life began talking about how much fun it would be to ride from Italy to Croatia…poof…within a week, this circuit and multi-day ride was created.
The ride begins 15 March in Treviso’s historic square, traveling through countryside and coastal Roman roads to finish in the center of Trieste. SLC Sport Life Cycling Club will join riders for this first leg, swelling the peloton to 30+ participants.
As Stage 2 begins, riders will pedal through the rolling hills of Istria, then end the day with a short ferry to Lopar on Croatia’s Rab Island. Leaving Lopar, the route island hops down the Dalmatian Coast, ending Stage 3 on Croatia’s mainland in Zadar. Stage 4 takes in one of the coast’s most scenic segments, pedaling from Zadar to Split. On the final Stage 5, riders will skirt the Dalmatian coastline from Split to Drvenik, then ferry to Hvar. The event culminates, 19 March, as riders pedal the historic island of Hvar, through the UNESCO Plain and Croatia’s oldest settlement at Stari Grad to end in Hvar Town.
The tour aims to introduce cyclists from around the world to the beauty of Italy and Croatia’s landscape, infrastructure and accessibility for cyclists. Local chefs and winemakers will be in the spotlight for evening dinners, along with discussion of each area’s renowned specialties.
While the group will cover kilometer after kilometer of breathtaking scenery, the tour is designed to challenge. Pedaling approximately 160 kilometers per day, participants will hone skills and improve endurance, many in preparation for the upcoming racing season.
